Special Session at WDBE Summit – Digital sensors can make construction more sustainable
At the WDBE Summit on 28–29 September, the event’s Danish collaborators BLOXHUB and ConTech Lab (Molio) will organise a 45 minute Special Session. The programme, with speakers from HD Lab, NCC and Sensohive, is dedicated to explain the role that the improved sensoring technologies play in make our built environment more sustainable.
Today, it has become cheap and easy to get started with IoT technology, and the solutions are so effective that we have to wonder that they do not win out faster. With sensors, we get new senses that are razor sharp day and night and that can help optimize our construction processes and drive our buildings better. There are many different solutions on the market that help solve most of the challenges that construction faces.
With sensors on the construction site, contractors can save money on anti-theft protection, avoid damage to the equipment, ensure that the building materials are stored correctly and measure the performance of the machines. And by tracking their building materials and tools, craftsmen avoid wasting time looking for them on the construction site. But IoT technology is not just about optimizing construction processes. It can also reduce waste in the operational phase of buildings, making it cheaper and more sustainable. Built-in sensors in, for example, concrete can collect data on moisture and can send information to the client in relation to maintenance. The client can install sensors in the various rooms to ensure its users the best possible indoor climate in relation to CO2 content, temperature and light – and at the same time turn down the light, heating and cleaning in the rooms that are not used.
In short, sensors can optimize both the construction phase and the operational phase and make construction more sustainable. The business case is obvious even though we rarely see the IoT solutions in use. This applies to both new construction and operation of existing buildings. We will elaborate on how to kickstart the use of IoT technology making construction more sustainable and more productive.
